What to Expect from an In-Home Newborn Photography Session

As a hospital-trained newborn photographer, I understand how precious and fleeting the early moments of your baby’s life are. That’s why I’m dedicated to capturing these memories in the safest and most comfortable environment: your home. Here’s what you can expect from a professional in-home newborn photography session and why choosing an experienced photographer is essential, especially when handling babies under 4 weeks old.

Sanitation and Safety First
Safety and sanitation are my top priorities in newborn photography. I follow hospital-grade hygiene practices, thoroughly sanitizing all props, blankets, clothing, and equipment before each session. I also take extra care when handling your baby, always providing a calm, safe, and soothing experience. I wear gloves when handling your baby, and a mask is used upon request.

When to Schedule Your Session
It is perfectly okay and customary for babies to be photographed less than 24 hours after birth in a hospital setting, as many hospitals offer professional photography services for newborns. However, when scheduling a private newborn photography session, I recommend waiting at least 48 hours after birth. By this time, you and your baby will have had a chance to settle and adjust to life outside the hospital, ensuring a more comfortable session for both of you.

As a hospital-trained photographer, I understand the delicate balance required when working with newborns. I am happy to photograph your baby in the hospital shortly after birth or in the comfort of your home around the 48-hour mark—whichever you prefer.

The Ideal Age for Newborn Photos
The first few weeks of life are truly magical, and capturing that fresh, “newborn” look is best done before your baby reaches 4 weeks old. This is the window where babies are still sleepy, have that squishy, curled-up pose, and are more easily settled for those timeless, peaceful shots. After 4 weeks, babies tend to become more alert, stretch out, and are less likely to sleep through a session, making those dreamy newborn photos a little more challenging. Babies should be photographed the first 48 hours after birth to get the best images.

Circumcision: As a hospital-trained newborn photographer, I’m properly trained to handle your newly circumcised baby just as I would in a hospital setting. As a Newborn Hospital Photographer, I photograph and handle babies under 24 to 48 hours old with the highest sanitation and safety allowed in a hospital setting.  Babies can be photographed directly after a successful circumcision, as the baby will likely be sleeping during the duration of the photoshoot. This is highly preferred and should only be done by a trained newborn hospital photographer, which most hospitals allow.

The Session Process
Your in-home session will typically occur in your home, where your baby feels the most secure. I bring all the necessary props and equipment—such as soft blankets, wraps, and baskets—so you don’t need to worry about anything. I work slowly and carefully during the shoot, ensuring your baby is always supported, comfortable, and content. I also allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, and soothing breaks.

In-Hospital Session: Request a tentative appointment for your due week. Depending on the schedule, you will be officially scheduled once you deliver or within one week of delivery.

By capturing these early moments immediately, you’re preserving memories that will last a lifetime. The newborn phase is brief, but with my expertise and your trust, we can create beautiful images that will remind you of your baby’s first days for years. Schedule today.

Let me help you cherish these precious moments with an in-home or hospital newborn photography session that prioritizes safety, comfort, and your baby’s unique beauty.
